Measles just killed an unvaccinated child in New York, the state’s first death from the disease in more than 30 years.
It happened in Lewis County, a rural pocket about 93 miles north of Syracuse. State health officials announced it on November 2.
Nobody should be shocked. New York has confirmed 178 measles cases this year, and 170 of those were outside New York City. Lewis County alone has 15.
Governor Kathy Hochul saw it coming and declared a disaster emergency in early October.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine give 97% protection.
We beat this disease decades ago. Now it’s killing kids again.
