Grief and Tears as 21-Year-Old Nairobi Woman is Stabbed 8 Times in Umoja II Apartment Block.
A family is consumed by grief and tears after their 21-year-old daughter, Francisca Wanja Thuranira, was brutally murdered inside a two bedroom apartment in Umoja II, Nairobi.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations - DCI and officers from Buruburu Police Station have since launched a multi agency manhunt for the primary suspect, the victim's estranged boyfriend, following the horrific discovery of her body on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Francisca, who originally grew up in Meru County in a humble background, had relocated to Nairobi after completing her secondary school education to pursue a career in the beauty industry and uplift her family's financial fortunes.
However, her life took a volatile turn after she met her boyfriend in 2025. Family members, including her sister Alice Thuranira and aunt Agrippina Meme, described the boyfriend as short tempered and prone to severe outbursts.
The frequent violent arguments eventually forced Francisca to flee her own apartment and seek refuge at her aunt's residence in Umoja II.
The tragic discovery unfolded on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, around midday when Agrippina Meme grew anxious after her repeated calls and text messages to Francisca went completely unanswered.
Since the silence was uncharacteristic, Agrippina asked a neighbor to check on the second floor apartment. The neighbor found the main entrance unlocked and slightly open, with no initial signs of forced entry.
Upon searching the rooms, they found Francisca lying motionless and unresponsive on the lower deck of a double decker bed, surrounded by a pool of blood from severe chest wounds.
After the neighbor raised the alarm, local authorities secured the apartment while DCI homicide and forensic detectives took over the scene. Crime scene investigators confirmed Francisca had sustained eight visible stab wounds to her chest and recovered a blood stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon.
Building caretaker James Munyeki and several residents reported seeing Francisca walk into the apartment block alongside a man at around 10:00 AM on the morning of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, narrowing the crime window to less than two hours before her discovery at midday.
Because neighbors on the second floor heard no screams or sounds of a struggle, investigators believe the violent attack was sudden and swift.
Forensic digital analysis of the victim's phone revealed a chilling sequence of events leading up to the attack on the morning of Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Her boyfriend had relentlessly placed eight unanswered call attempts to her phone earlier that morning while she actively avoided him.
Detectives believe that after being ignored, the suspect tracked her down in person under the pretense of reconciliation. Mobile phone carrier data placed the suspect's phone directly inside the Umoja II apartment block during the 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM crime window on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, before it was deliberately switched off to evade live tracking.
Following a postmortem examination at Mama Lucy Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital, her body remains at the mortuary as police investigations continue, with the family expected to lay Francisca to rest at her ancestral home in Meru County.
Meanwhile, the eight missed calls stand in grim contrast to the eight fatal stab wounds, as homicide units actively pursue the fleeing suspect.
