South Africa seeks direct diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. to ease growing tensions and protect vital trade agreements.

Relations have been strained since a heated meeting in May 2025 where President Trump publicly confronted President Ramaphosa over claims about white farmers.

South Africa fears exclusion from AGOA, a key trade program giving duty-free access to U.S. markets, as well as facing visa restrictions and lack of G20 accreditation.

New South African ambassador Roelf Meyer advocates high-level talks to clarify misunderstandings and resolve the impasse. #SouthAfrica

South Africa Anti-Immigration Protests Turn Violent as 24 Vehicles Are Torched

At least 24 vehicles have been set ablaze and foreign-owned shops looted in South Africa after anti-immigration protests erupted into violence in Soweto, near Johannesburg, and Durban, police have confirmed.

The clashes occurred on Thursday amid growing anger over a court ruling requiring the government to remove barriers that had prevented some migrants from applying for asylum.

South Africa has a history of recurring xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals, particularly migrants from neighbouring African countries. The latest unrest has renewed concerns over the safety of immigrants and the treatment of foreign-owned businesses in the country. #SouthAfrica

🚨🇿🇦 Threats of a civil war in South Africa as the anti-migrant protests have intensified. Roads have been blocked off in parts of the country and foreign owned cars are being burnt down.

Locals have been seen with tires, potentially for "Necklacing", a famous South African execution method were a tire is placed over the individuals head, wrapping their arms, drenched with gasoline and set on FIRE❗️

Any foreign loooking/sounding individual has to provide ID to prove nationality or risk getting beat up by the mob. #SouthAfrica

The Woman Who Became First Lady of Two Countries 🇲🇿🇿🇦

Graça Machel has one of the most remarkable stories in African political history. She was married to Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president, before his death in a 1986 plane crash. Years later, she married Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, on his 80th birthday in 1998. (Nelson Mandela Foundation)

That made Graça Machel First Lady of two different African nations—Mozambique and South Africa. But her story goes far beyond being the wife of presidents: she was a teacher, Mozambique’s first Minister of Education, a liberation-era figure and later a prominent advocate for women and children’s rights. (Nelson Mandela Foundation)

From Mozambique’s independence struggle to sharing the final years of Nelson Mandela’s life, Graça Machel’s journey is one of the most extraordinary stories of leadership, love and public service in modern African history. #SouthAfrica #Mozambique

South Africa is interested in bringing Starlink into its market to improve connectivity but insists on foreign operators supporting local economic-transformation goals.

The government requires telecom license holders to have at least 30% ownership by historically disadvantaged groups, which Starlink sees as a barrier.

To address this, South Africa is considering Equity Equivalent Investment Programmes (EEIPs) that allow foreign firms to invest in infrastructure or skills development instead of transferring equity.

There is a dispute between the government and regulator ICASA about fully recognizing EEIPs in telecom licensing, which would require legal amendments. #Starlink #SouthAfrica

Kenya, Uganda and South Africa have been selected to prepare for the production of a new once-a-month HIV prevention pill.

The drug, called alimatravir (MK-8527), is being developed by MSD/Merck and is currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials.

Manufacturers selected in Africa are Universal Corporation Limited in Kenya, Quality Chemical Industries Limited in Uganda and Aspen Pharmacare in South Africa.

With support from Unitaid, the companies are preparing their manufacturing capacity early so they could produce the drug locally if trials are successful and regulators approve it.

The move could help make new HIV prevention medicines available faster in Africa while strengthening the continent’s ability to manufacture advanced medicines locally.

South African police have launched multiple manhunts following three mass shootings, which left at least 32 people dead and dozens injured. Gunmen killed 18 people at a tavern near Johannesburg, 10 at an entertainment venue near Cape Town and four in a Cape Town township. Police are investigating possible motives, including retaliation and business rivalry. According to official statistics, South Africa recorded 5,427 murders between April and June 2026, averaging nearly 60 a day - one of the highest in the world. President Cyril Ramaphosa meanwhile has promised to take stronger action against violent crime. But many locals wonder: What will it take to stop the wave of deadly shootings in South Africa? #SouthAfrica

Algeria holds about 173.6 tonnes of official gold reserves, the largest amount held by any African central bank, according to World Gold Council data for 2026. 🇩🇿

That puts Algeria ahead of Libya, Egypt and South Africa in official gold holdings.

But having the most gold in reserve does not mean Algeria mines the most gold. Ghana remains Africa’s leading gold producer, producing roughly 6 million ounces in 2025.

Gold reserves are gold assets held or controlled by a country’s central bank, mainly as part of its financial reserves.

South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria are Africa’s three biggest economies, but none of their presidents are attending the 2026 UN General Assembly in New York in person. Instead, senior government officials are representing them. Ronald Lamola is leading South Africa’s delegation, Egypt is represented by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and Nigeria is represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

For South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa is staying in the country after doctors advised him to rest and recover. Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is also not attending, with his prime minister representing him. Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu is not there because he is on annual leave in France, so his vice president is leading the delegation. #Nigeria #Egypt #SouthAfrica

A tenth woman’s body has been found in South Africa, adding to growing concern over a series of recent killings of women in the country. 🇿🇦

The latest victim, believed to be in her 20s, was found wrapped in a duvet in a dam in Moroka, Soweto.

In a separate case, police arrested three suspects — one man and two women — in connection with the killing of Jabulile Ntimba in Dawn Park.

Police have not confirmed that the Soweto case is linked to the other recent killings of women in Ekurhuleni.
