Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in for a second five-year term, formally beginning a new mandate after his Prosperity Party secured a large parliamentary majority in the country’s 2026 elections.
Abiy took the oath of office on October 5 during the inaugural session of Ethiopia’s seventh House of Peoples’ Representatives after lawmakers appointed him prime minister. His Prosperity Party won 438 seats in the election, although voting was not held in Tigray and some areas of Amhara because of insecurity.
He begins his second term as Ethiopia faces renewed fighting in Tigray, strained relations with Eritrea and continuing efforts to secure access to the Red Sea.
