Uganda; The head of Uganda’s military said he will resign in the coming months, as he positions himself to succeed his father Yoweri Museveni, who has led the nation for more than four decades.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, 52, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Museveni’s eldest son, made the announcement in a series of posts on X on Friday, November 6, 2026.

“My time as CDF is coming to an end. I have accomplished all the tasks my God gave me. In a few months, I will hand over this office to a qualified officer. I shall dedicate my life to Christ after that,” he wrote.

Hours later, he sought to calm speculation about an immediate exit, stating: “Don’t worry I’m still around. At least for another year.” He did not name a successor or give a precise handover date.

The announcement comes amid growing public discussion of a potential father-to-son transition. In August 2026, Muhoozi declared his intention to contest Uganda’s presidency in 2031, saying he expected to win “by the grace of Almighty God” with his father’s support. He chairs the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group that has mobilized support for his ambitions. #Uganda
