Tanzania and Angola have agreed to connect their Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean transport corridors with a railway link running through Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced.
“We have an agreement to connect the Benguela Corridor with Tanzania’s Central Corridor, with the link expected to extend to the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Hassan said. She added that the project would ease the movement of passengers and cargo, accelerate trade, and strengthen the economies of countries along the route.
The leaders stressed that improved rail connectivity would support broader African economic integration. An additional section of infrastructure will still be needed to fully join the rehabilitated Benguela and TAZARA networks.
