Cannabis use was associated with epigenetic changes in DNA, according to a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Researchers analyzed more than 1,000 adults and identified DNA methylation patterns associated with both recent and cumulative cannabis use. These changes can influence gene activity without altering the underlying genetic sequence.
The researchers also found associations with biological pathways related to cellular proliferation and categories linked to disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, this does not prove that cannabis causes these conditions.
The study was published in 2023, and its findings require confirmation through further research.
