Human cells appeared younger in less than a week, without changing their DNA. Harvard researchers found a way to reverse signs of cellular aging using chemicals alone.
A research team led by David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School identified six chemical cocktails that restored youthful gene activity patterns in aging human cells. The treatments also improved changes in how genetic material moves between the nucleus and the rest of the cell.
Previously, reversing cellular aging relied on genetic reprogramming, which involves introducing specific genes into cells. The new approach achieved similar signs of rejuvenation using chemical compounds instead, without causing the cells to lose their original identity.
The findings were published in the journal Aging on July 12, 2023.
The discovery could open a new path toward treatments for age-related diseases and cellular repair.
