MŨGO WA KÍBÍRŨ THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE

Mũgo wa Kíbírũ, the great prophet, foresaw his own disappearance. When the time came, he summoned the twelve elders (kings) to the thíngíra and told them: “ I will be leaving on a journey of no return. Two days from now, prepare for me one gourd of Mũratína brewed with honey, not sugarcane. Bring also a he-goat, and take me to the Mũthaí tree, the very place where my father, Kíbírũ, found me as a young boy. Slaughter the goat and cover me with its skin.” On the appointed day, everything was done exactly as he instructed. The elders left him there alone.

At dawn the next morning, they returned… but he was gone. They searched for any trace, footprints, signs of struggle, marks of wild animals ,but nothing was found. No trace. No evidence. It was as if he had vanished from the face of the earth. And that is how Mũgo wa Kíbírũ disappeared.

He also left behind a warning: “ When the frogs arrive, do not take everything they bring. Take only what benefits you.” To me, this speaks clearly even today. To those who say: “Njíkũ, how can you reject Christianity yet use English, go to schools introduced by the white man, or use their technology?” my answer is simple: i took what benefits me.

Taking knowledge, language, or tools does not mean I must take everything, including beliefs that replace my own. My ancestors knew Ngaí long before the white man set foot on our land. So why should I abandon Ngaí for an imported God? #Kikuyu #mugo #nyeri
