TUM Students' Bus Overturns En Route to Former Leader's Funeral

Students from Technical University of Mombasa were traveling to Awasi for the funeral of Elvis Otieno, known as 'Beast,' a former student association president who died in July from an epileptic attack.

The bus crashed Friday on the Awasi-Ahero highway, rolling over and leaving it heavily damaged with shattered windows and a crushed front.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir confirmed two deaths and multiple injuries, while social media reports suggested up to six fatalities; rescue teams rushed the injured to hospitals as officials work to confirm the toll.

Siaya Governor James Orengo mourned the loss, calling it a heartbreaking end to the students' journey of unity.

We thought it would end with Albert Ojwang, or Julia Njoki. Muthaiga police arrested Eric Otieno on Saturday and on Tuesday he was dead.

Another life lost in police custody. Another family left with questions. Another silence where there should be accountability.

The death of a boda boda rider from Mathare after detention at Muthaiga Police Station is not an isolated tragedy, it echoes the unresolved shadow of Albert Ojwang’s death. How many more names must we turn into hashtags before we confront the truth?

Police cells must never become waiting rooms for death. They are spaces of lawful custody, not unrecorded endings. When the State takes a citizen into its hands, it assumes a duty of care, not a license for cruelty, neglect or disappearance.

This is how impunity becomes culture, not in loud moments, but in repeated silence. And we must refuse to normalise it. It also strikes at the heart of the rule of law, undermining the constitutional guarantee under Article 50 that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Justice must not be begged for. It must be demanded, enforced, and seen.

On the highly awaited day in the Kenyan political space, the Linda Mwananchi movement, led primarily by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna,conducted a high-visibility grassroots tour through Trans Nzoia County. The journey set off from the Soy/Matunda area along the Eldoret-Kitale highway through Moi's Bridge towards Kitale town. The Convoy drew large, energetic crowds as part of its Western Kenya mobilization ahead of the 2027 elections.


The itinerary featured stopovers and public addresses. The crew had an unplanned or early engagement at Soy. In Soy, the team mobilized and addressed market crowds, followed by planned stops at Moi’s Bridge( around 10 a.m.), Sibanga (around 11:30 a.m.), and a mega rally at Kitale’s Mwangaza Grounds (from about 2:30 p.m.).

Leaders including Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and others (with some arriving by chopper) were welcomed by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.

Crowds lined streets, climbed rooftops and buildings for views, chanted for Sifuna, and created a “sea of humanity” and a near-shutdown atmosphere in places like Moi’s Bridge and Kitale; local bands entertained waiting supporters, and bodaboda riders had organized escorts. The tour was framed around unity, justice, governance, cost of living, accountability, and citizen engagement under slogans emphasizing dialogue and organization.

The Linda mwananchi faction team forms part of a broader Western/Mulembe-region push for better inclusion in Kenyan politics.

Linda Mwananchi originated as an ODM faction critical of the party’s engagement with the broad-based government/Ruto administration.
Since then, it has intensified grassroots work, raised citizen-funded donations, announced intentions to break fully from ODM and register as its own party, and positioned itself for 2027 with Sifuna as a prominent face.

NEMA Begins Crackdown on Noisy Bars in Nairobi

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has begun a crackdown on entertainment joints in Nairobi, accusing them of causing excessive noise pollution.

The latest action saw NEMA officers inspect an entertainment joint in the Lavington area of Nairobi on Wednesday, July 22, following complaints from members of the public.

The bar was directed to immediately stop activities contributing to excessive noise and comply with the Environmental Management and Coordination Regulations, 2009.

Let's not pretend—the departure of Pauline Njoroge from the Jubilee Party is NOT without consequences.

She was a serving member of the party's National Executive Council (NEC). She was also a close confidante of the party leader, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta.

I know PN to be a courteous and calculating person. It is difficult to imagine that she would have released such a statement without first speaking to the party leader.

Whether that assumption is correct or not, her exit inevitably raises questions about the direction of the party and what may be happening behind the scenes.
