One of the most valuable inventions in human history was never patented.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web while working at CERN.
Then, on August 6, 1991, he introduced it to the wider internet.
He could have tried to control it.
He could have charged licensing fees.
He could have demanded royalties every time someone built on it.
He didnβt.
Berners-Lee chose not to patent the Web, and CERN later released its core technology freely for anyone to use.
That decision meant people around the world could build websites, share information and create entire businesses without paying permission fees to one inventor.
