Indonesia Ferry Capsizes in Java Sea, Dozens Still Missing

A major search-and-rescue operation is underway in Indonesia after a passenger ferry capsized in the Java Sea, leaving several people dead and more than 100 others missing.

The vessel, Virgo Transport 8, was travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin when it encountered rough seas in the Masalembo waters. Reports indicate that strong waves caused the ferry to list before eventually overturning.

There were 243 people on board, including 30 crew members. Rescue teams have so far recovered 108 survivors, while six deaths have been confirmed. Authorities say 129 people remain missing.

More than 600 rescuers, supported by ships, aircraft, drones and underwater search teams, are taking part in the operation. However, difficult sea conditions and strong waves are complicating the search.

Authorities are continuing to search the surrounding waters for survivors and those still unaccounted for.
