UK Reinstates Cancelled September BATUK Military Training, Mudavadi Confirms

The government of the United Kingdom has reinstated a cancelled military training set for September in Laikipia, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed.

The training at the British Army Training Unit of Kenya (BATUK) centre in Laikipia was initially cancelled on Thursday, July 23, after the government of Kenya and the UK failed to agree on conditions for the renewal of licenses.
"The Government of Kenya welcomes the decision for the planned military training exercise at the British Army Training Unit Kenya to proceed," Mudavadi said.

He added, "This outcome reflects the strength of the longstanding partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom, built over decades on mutual respect, constructive engagement and a shared commitment to peace and security."

One day in 1981, President Daniel arap Moi found himself at the center of an unexpected crisis thousands of kilometres away from home after his famous fimbo ya Nyayo suddenly broke during an overseas trip.

Moi had just addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York and was heading to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Melbourne, Australia, when the incident happened during a stopover in Los Angeles.

As the president descended a staircase, the ivory baton slipped and snapped into two pieces.

To outsiders, it may have appeared like a minor accident.

But within Moi’s inner circle, the broken rungu triggered panic.

The fimbo ya Nyayo was more than a walking stick. It had become Moi’s signature symbol of authority and power, the one item closely associated with his presidency wherever he travelled.

Appearing before world leaders without it was not an option.

According to longtime presidential aide Lee Njiru, Moi immediately asked whether the broken baton could be repaired. The answer was no.

The ivory could not be patched without exposing the damage.

Calls were immediately placed to State House Nairobi.

Moi’s personal assistant Peter Rotich was urgently instructed to locate spare batons and leave Kenya immediately. State House officials reportedly confirmed that two spare ivory rungus were safely kept in Nairobi.

Rotich collected them and began a frantic journey across continents as Moi’s delegation delayed parts of its travel schedule to buy him time.

The operation quickly became a race against the clock.

As Moi’s plane approached Australia, fears grew within the delegation that the president could land without the famous symbol that had become part of his public identity.

But moments before Moi disembarked in Sydney, Rotich arrived carrying the replacement rungu flown all the way from Nairobi.

The baton was handed to Moi inside the aircraft.

When the president finally stepped out to greet dignitaries and crowds, he confidently waved the replacement fimbo ya Nyayo as though nothing unusual had happened.

Nobody outside the presidential circle knew that behind the scenes, State House had spent nearly two days coordinating an international operation to replace a broken baton.

Years later, Lee Njiru would describe the incident as one of the moments that revealed to him the true nature of power around the presidency.

He said those close to a president must never confuse proximity to power with ownership of it because presidential authority is temporary and borrowed.

One year later in 1982, there was attempted coup.

Police officers from Muthangari Police Station today, 23rd July 2026, arrested a police officer after recovering approximately 20 kilograms of suspected cannabis sativa during an operation in Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi County.

Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, the officers raided the suspect's residence and recovered two bags containing six bales of cannabis sativa wrapped in yellow tape.

The suspect was placed in police custody pending processing and arraignment in court to face relevant charges. The recovered narcotics were secured as exhibits.

Some crimes disappear from public memory.

Others leave wounds that never heal.

This is one of them.

I have followed this case from 2019 until today's conviction.

Seven years later, one conclusion is impossible to escape:

This was not a crime of passion.

It was a carefully planned execution.

Before I tell you what happened, let me leave you with one thought that could one day save someone's life.

If you separate from someone who suddenly starts denying children they once proudly acknowledged, don't spend years trying to convince them otherwise. Walk away if you must. Raise those children alone.

Because sometimes the issue is no longer DNA.

It is revenge.

And revenge has no conscience.

Joyce Syombua and Peter Mwaura Mugure grew up in Nairobi's Kayole estate.

They fell in love while they were still young, got married after she finished school and were blessed with two children, Shanice and Prince.

To everyone else, they looked like a happy young family.

They weren't.

The marriage collapsed, and Joyce was left raising the children alone.

When she sought child support, Peter denied they were his.

A court-ordered DNA test proved he was the biological father, and he was ordered to provide maintenance while being granted visitation rights.

That court order would become the trap that led Joyce and her children to their deaths.

In October 2019, Peter invited them to Nanyuki, saying he wanted to spend time with his children.

Joyce agreed because she believed her children deserved a relationship with their father.

Her mother reportedly felt uneasy about the trip.

Something didn't feel right.

But Joyce chose hope over fear.

She kept updating a close friend through text messages after arriving at Laikipia Air Base.

The following morning, Peter offered to take the children for a walk around the barracks.

They never returned.

He later told Joyce the children were safe with a friend.

According to the court, they were already dead.

That night...

He killed Joyce too.

Three innocent lives erased.

The evidence presented in court revealed something even more chilling.

This was not a murder committed in anger.

Days before inviting his family to Nanyuki, Peter had allegedly arranged for a shallow grave to be dug.

The grave was waiting while they were still alive.

While Joyce packed for the trip...

While Shanice and Prince looked forward to seeing their father...

Their final resting place had already been prepared.

After the murders, the court heard that he concealed the bodies before transporting and secretly burying them in a remote location.

He lied about Joyce's whereabouts and tried to cover his tracks.

But the truth eventually caught up with him.

After seven years of investigations and court proceedings, the High Court found the evidence overwhelming and convicted Peter Mwaura Mugure on three counts of murder.

Justice was finally served.

But no conviction can bring back a mother.

No sentence can restore the dreams of a ten-year-old girl.

No prison term can return a five-year-old boy whose only mistake was trusting his father.

Perhaps the most frightening lesson is this:

Evil doesn't always shout.

Sometimes it smiles.

Sometimes it speaks politely.

Sometimes it asks to see the children.

And sometimes, behind that calm face, is a person capable of unimaginable cruelty.

May Joyce Syombua, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael rest in eternal peace.

May their story remind every parent that protecting your children sometimes means walking away forever.

Police Probe Mbagathi Road Crash After Vehicle Bursts Into Flames on Footbridge
A strange road accident along Mbagathi Road in Nairobi has left many residents and motorists searching for answers after a vehicle caught fire on a pedestrian footbridge early on Saturday morning.
The incident happened at about 6am near the flyover close to the Riara University turn-off.
According to reports, the vehicle was carrying three people when the accident occurred. Images and videos shared online showed the badly damaged vehicle lying on its side on a section of the footbridge stairs while flames engulfed it.
The circumstances that led to the crash remain unclear. Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle appeared to have left the main road before somehow making its way onto the stairs leading to the pedestrian flyover.
It eventually came to a stop on the footbridge, where it caught fire.
Videos recorded by members of the public showed large flames rising from the wreckage as people gathered nearby. Several motorists also stopped to watch as emergency efforts began.
The unusual location of the vehicle has raised many questions, with police now expected to determine exactly what happened before the crash.
One witness claimed that a police officer who arrived at the scene was urgently calling for assistance while trying to rescue a passenger believed to be trapped inside the burning vehicle.
However, the witness said the officer was unable to reach the occupant because of the intensity of the fire.
As videos of the incident spread across social media, claims emerged that three occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and died in the blaze.
However, authorities had not confirmed those reports by the time the incident was reported. Police had also not released official details regarding the number of people inside the vehicle or whether there were any fatalities.
Rescue teams and other emergency personnel were later deployed to the area to manage traffic and respond to the situation.
Investigators are expected to examine the scene and establish what caused the accident, how the vehicle left the roadway, and how it ended up on the elevated footbridge.
The incident has shocked many Nairobi residents, with the dramatic footage continuing to attract attention online as investigations begin.
