Police Investigating Possible Link Between Killings of Lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and Psychologist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso

Detectives investigating the fatal shooting of clinical psychologist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso are exploring whether her killing is connected to the 2025 assassination of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, as they revisit a decades-long legal and property dispute that has resurfaced in the investigation.

According to police sources, investigators are pursuing several possible motives, including whether a prolonged divorce and property battle may have played a role in both murders. Authorities, however, have not established a direct link between the two killings, emphasizing that investigations are still ongoing.

Dr. Mutiso was shot dead earlier this week near Kenyatta National Hospital after reportedly requesting an Uber. Witnesses told investigators that armed assailants on a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle and opened fire. Detectives are also examining the movements of a Toyota Prado that allegedly stopped briefly near the taxi moments before the attack.

The murder has drawn comparisons to the September 2025 assassination of advocate Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down along Karen Road near Galleria Mall. In both cases, the attackers reportedly used a motorcycle and struck while traffic was slow-moving, enabling them to flee the scene quickly.

As part of the investigation, detectives are reviewing Mbobu's legal history, including a highly contentious divorce and property dispute that began in 2004.

Court records show that Mbobu represented a husband in a protracted divorce case. The former wife later filed a complaint against the advocate before the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), alleging that he had deliberately delayed the case after receiving legal fees. The disciplinary tribunal dismissed the complaint in Mbobu's favour.

The woman later made public allegations accusing the lawyer of corruption, prompting Mbobu to file a defamation suit. The court ruled in his favour, awarding him KSh1.5 million in damages. An appeal against the judgment was subsequently dismissed.

After the damages remained unpaid, a house awarded to the woman in the divorce settlement was attached by the court. The property was later transferred to Mbobu, who eventually sold it to the woman's former husband. He is reported to have moved into the home with his new wife, Dr. Victoria Mutiso.

Sources familiar with the investigation also claim that Dr. Mutiso had previously reported receiving threats, including an incident in which she allegedly said she had been threatened with a firearm. It is understood that a report was filed at Kilimani Police Station, although police have not officially commented on the matter.

Detectives are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the Upper Hill area, analysing mobile phone records, interviewing witnesses, and conducting forensic examinations to determine whether the two killings are connected or whether the similarities are merely coincidental.

The investigation comes amid growing concern over a series of targeted shootings in Nairobi that have raised questions about organized criminal networks and the possible use of hired gunmen.

In the latest development, Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Chris, have been arraigned in court in connection with the fatal shooting of Dr. Victoria Mutiso. Mbithe is the former wife of Prof. Ndetei, Dr. Mutiso's husband. The couple divorced more than 25 years ago. The court proceedings are expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the killing as investigations continue. #Nairobi
