The cost of cooking oil in Kenya has risen to an average of KSh358 per litre, marking another increase that is pushing household food budgets under greater strain.

The latest price jump has been linked to higher international palm oil prices, increasing the cost of importing edible oils into the country and driving up retail prices.

The increase brings cooking oil prices close to the highs witnessed during the 2022 food inflation crisis, adding fresh pressure on families already grappling with the rising cost of living.

A new NACADA report reveals that nearly 1 million Kenyans are currently using cannabis, making it the country's most commonly used illicit drug. The agency says cannabis use increased by 90% in the four years leading to 2024, with young people aged 15–35 accounting for the highest rates.

According to the report, Nairobi has the highest prevalence of cannabis use at 6.3%, followed by Nyanza (2.4%) and the Coast (1.9%). NACADA also warns that many adolescents begin experimenting with drugs between the ages of 13 and 15, making early intervention critical.

The report further highlights that more than 234,000 Kenyans are living with severe cannabis use disorders. Meanwhile, a large international study published in JAMA Health Forum found that teenagers who use cannabis are about twice as likely to later develop serious mental health conditions, including psychotic and bipolar disorders.

NACADA is urging parents, schools, communities, and government agencies to work together to prevent drug abuse and protect young people from the growing impact of substance use.
