Environmental groups say Dangoteβs Sh2.2 trillion Lamu refinery plan risks damaging Lamuβs fragile ecosystem, threatening mangroves, coral reefs and fishing livelihoods.
They also warn it could become a stranded asset as the world moves toward cleaner energy. Dangote has proposed building a 700,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Lamu.
