President William Ruto has announced plans for Nairobi's first underground metro as part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transport system.

The proposed first phase features a 30-kilometre underground rail line linking the CBD to Eastlands with 25 stations, designed to serve a city of nearly 5 million people making an estimated 12 million trips every day. The project, recently approved by Nairobi City County, is expected to accelerate planning and financing, with future extensions planned for Westlands, Ngong Road, and other parts of the city.

While many see the metro as a transformative step toward solving Nairobi's traffic congestion, others argue that fixing existing roads and basic infrastructure should remain a priority.

The National Assembly has dismissed as fake a viral letter claiming Parliament had asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct integrity vetting for five purported Cabinet nominees.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Parliament said the document did not originate from the National Assembly and urged Kenyans to disregard it, warning against the spread of misinformation.
The forged letter, which carried the National Assembly's letterhead and appeared to bear the Clerk's signature, alleged that several prominent figures had been nominated to President William Ruto's Cabinet.
Among those listed were Winnie Odinga for the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed for the Ministry of Lands, Koki Muli for the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Cleophas Malala for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, and ODM official Agnes Zani for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy.
The fake document surfaced amid growing speculation over a possible Cabinet reshuffle ahead of the 2027 General Election, with social media users linking the purported changes to recent political developments, including the Ol Kalou by-election.
Parliament reiterated that no such communication had been issued and urged the public to verify official information through authorised government channels before sharing it.

Senate Annuls NTSA School Transport, Vehicle Inspection & Commercial Vehicle Regulations

Thousands of motorists across the country can breathe a sigh of relief after the Senate annulled three controversial National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) traffic regulations, effectively preventing their enforcement.

The decision affects the Traffic (School Transport) Rules, 2026, the Traffic (Motor Vehicle Inspection) Rules, 2026, and the National Transport and Safety Authority (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) Regulations, 2026, all of which had sparked concern among motorists and transport operators.

The Senate decided after adopting a report by the Select Committee on Delegated Legislation, which recommended that the three statutory instruments be annulled under Section 18 of the Statutory Instruments Act.

The committee found that the regulations should not remain in force, paving the way for their formal cancellation by the House.

The now-cancelled rules had introduced sweeping changes to Kenya's transport sector, including stricter requirements for school vehicles, revised vehicle inspection rules, and new operational standards for commercial vehicles.

Among the notable changes was the introduction of annual inspections for all vehicles, including private cars older than four years, at a cost of between Ksh1000 and Ksh2000.

At the time, NTSA argued that the move was aimed at ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles were in operation to reduce road crashes and hold transport providers accountable for non-compliance.

NTSA’s implementation of the new regulations had sparked concern among motorists and transport operators, with many arguing that some of the requirements would increase operational costs.

The cancellation now means the affected regulations can no longer be enforced, providing relief to drivers, matatu operators, school transport providers and commercial vehicle owners.

However, the latest development paves the way for the government to review the regulations and address the concerns raised before introducing any revised rules through the approval process.

In early March 2024, in Mathira East, Nyeri County, night security guard Evans Kosgei allegedly hacked his long-term partner and mother of his child, Jackline Jerop Kimaiyo, to death in her rented house before fleeing. Days later, he took his own life by hanging from a tree in Thika. What began as a story of young high school love, teenage pregnancy, and deep personal sacrifice ended in a brutal murder-suicide driven by accusations of betrayal and infidelity.

Evans Kosgei, a 33-year-old night watchman, worked in Thika, Kiambu County, and lived in Waitethie. He came from a family where he sold sheep, goats, trees, and part of the family land to support his partner’s education. Jackline Jerop Kimaiyo, a secondary school teacher from Elgeyo Marakwet County, taught at Itundu Secondary School in Mathira East. Her father, David Kiyeng, had traveled from Iten in a last attempt to reconcile the couple.

The two had been together since February 14, 2016. They met in high school, with Jackline at Anin Girls in Elgeyo Marakwet and Evans at Kimoning Boys in Uasin Gishu. They had one young daughter. Jackline became pregnant in September 2018 as a teenager. Her father disowned her at the time. Evans stood by her. He relocated to care for the family and sacrificed greatly so she could study at Murang’a University, graduate, and become a teacher. Those close to them saw the couple as resilient. They had overcome early family opposition.

Problems grew after Jackline graduated and Evans took a night guard job in Thika. The distance added to financial pressures and relationship strains. Evans accused Jackline of cheating with other men, including Shadrack Kiprop and Stanley Ndegwa. He felt deeply betrayed after everything he had given up. Under the handle @Kosgei022 on X, he began posting publicly about their story, his pain, and his accusations. He tagged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and several media houses.

His posts captured his growing distress. In one thread he wrote: “Fellow Kenyans, what do these ladies want? Here is my story! There is this lady by the name Jackline whom we started dating way back in high school... We agreed to be husband and wife since we had a kid together... I have sold my property, including felling down my trees and selling my sheep, just to support her in school.” He added that he now understood “why many girls are being killed... because of their stupidity” and warned that if anything happened, people should know what was going on behind the scenes.

He posted: “My sweetheart you decided to go against all what we promised each other 9 years ago. I had confided in you. I trusted you more than I was trusting my own parents for you only to betray me after getting some money. But it's okay. Let it be a lesson to the rest.”

Other messages included: “Regrets comes later. I wish you rectify your mistakes way early in the start of relationship by now we could be a way better but you chose to do things your own way. It's unfortunate that this young family had to die because of your stupidity.” And: “Men, allow me today to be a motivational speaker. Never ever take back a cheating wife.”

Around March 6, 2024, Jackline did not report to Itundu Secondary School. Colleagues checked her rented house and discovered her body hacked to death. Evans went missing. While evading police, he kept posting. He wrote: “Rest well my queen. I loved you but you loved someone else. Choices have Consequences!” Another post said: “RIP if you are deaf but if you are still breathing then learn a lesson that better tell someone straight to the face that I will love you alone or I will not love you than triple dealing. Hope all other girls before you learn a lesson.” And finally: “Rest in peace my love. Am following you back.”

Police tracked his phone from the Mt Kenya Forest area to Thika. He slipped past a search team in the Jomoko area along Thika-Mangu Road. On March 11, 2024, Evans Kosgei’s body was found hanging from a tree in Thika. He left a suicide note accepting responsibility for Jackline’s death together with her identification card. His body was taken to General Kago Morgue.

Investigations confirmed a murder-suicide linked to a suspected love triangle. The families grieved separately. Jackline was buried in Elgeyo Marakwet. Their young daughter was left orphaned. Relatives took on the responsibility of raising her.

In the end, no outsiders caused this tragedy. It was a relationship built on love and sacrifice that collapsed under suspicion, distance, and deep emotional pain. Public posts, a panga, and a rope brought everything to a sudden, violent end. Two young lives were lost, and one child now faces the world without her parents. The two families must carry on and find strength to support the little girl they left behind.

Yesterday's vote in Ol Kalou doesn't sugarcoat for President William Ruto the plain and transparent truth on the torturous road to 2027. It gives him a binary choice. Continue listening to the effusive and praiseful lullabies by Kiambu politicians whose support is in single digit and not beyond immediate family members, stick with Prof Kithure Kindiki and believe their false narrative that he will get 40% of the Mt. Kenya vote and know that a humiliating defeat is certain. Or act the political fox you always have been, pick a Luo or a Luhya runningmate(preferably the latter) and hit the read running. The choices are clear. And President Ruto must smell the coffee...by force.
